Word Formation

English-WORD FORMATION.

     

   In linguistic, word formation is creation of a new word. In wider sense, word formation denotes the process of creation of a new lexical word in different (type) ways 

 The various type of word formation are as follows.

(1) ACRONYMS: Acronyms are the initials such as NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) these are formed by using the initial letters of the words or word part in any phrase or name.

For instance •BBC: Britsh Broadcasting Co-operation.

•RADAR: Radio Detective and Ranging. 

some informal acronym used are •LOL: Laugh Out Loud 

•IDK: I don't Know. etc.

  

(2) BORROWING: English language is considered to be one of the richest language as far as the feature of borrowing is concerned. It has borrowed word for Latin, French, German, Persia, Spanish, Arabic and several Indian languages like Sanskrit etc. The words so borrowed now have been incorporated in English dictionary, thus are looked upon as word in English. This fact reveals about the openness in the attitude of English language. 

 Some examples of the borrowed word are 

•Barbecue which is borrowed from Spanish word 'Barbaco'

• Iceberg, borrowed from German word 'Eisberg'

• Door, borrowed from Sanskrit word 'Dwar'

(3)BLENDING: This word formation ie. Blending, can be defined as a process of word formation in which two words are combined or mixed or one element in fragmented (its is possible the both elements can be fragmented and the combined).

 Some examples are 

•Brunch which is blender using the word breakfast and lunch 

•Netizen which is blender using the word internet and citizen

•Romedy, blended using the word romance and comedy.

(4)CLIPPING: Clipping is a word formulation process  which consist in the reduction of a word to one of it's part. Also know as Shortening.

Types are 

▪︎Back Clipping.

•ad from advertisement 

•doc from doctor 

▪︎Fore Clipping.

•phone from telephone 

•bus from omnibus

▪︎Middle Clipping.

•flue from influenza 

•fridge from refrigerator

(5) COMPOUNDING: This can be defined as a process of word formation in which two or more base in cominedto from a word 

 For example 

•  break+fast= breakfast 

• black + board =blackboard 

The word which are put together have their own individual meaning. 

(6)AFFIXATION: A word formation in which you add an affix to the base word 

Affix is divided into two prefix and suffix.
